Early menopause sometimes referred to as premature ovarian failure or primary ovarian insufficiency which basically means that the ovaries have lost their normal function before a woman reaches the age of 40.  When ovaries lose their normal function, it means that they are unable to produce normal amounts of the hormones (oestrogen and progesterone).
